Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition, within the framework of UNEP‘s Medium-term Strategy 2018-2021 and the climate change thematic priority.
UNEP promotes increased knowledge, investment and action in climate change adaptation, with a focus on incorporating ecosystem based approaches, through three main areas of work: i) catalysing country level action by accessing international finance for adaptation on behalf of developing country governments and supporting governments to execute EbA projects, ii) distilling evidence for normative policy and programming guidance to catalyse more action on climate change and iii) by strengthening networks and dialogue processes between people and groups engaged in adaptation, in particular on EbA. In so doing, UNEP promotes actions to improve the scientific basis of policy and planning processes particularly in relation to finding solutions to adaptation through the natural environment.
Investment in adaptation is growing at an extraordinary pace, and at Cop26, countries committed to double the amount of finance for adaptation in developing countries by 2025 with further increases in adaptation financing beyond that. By drawing on lessons and successes from UNEP’s 50+ projects, this proposed series intends to build UNEP’s brand as an authority and global expert on the topic of climate adaptation and bring to the fore the environmental dimensions of adaptation investment design and practice.

The five required case studies are part of a series that gathers and shares valuable lessons from CCAU’s adaptation projects to provide normative guidance into how best to invest in adaptation, including investments in nature for adaptation results. The series will be a key mechanism by which UNEP will influence the UN system and other public and private sector entities, in line with the UNEP mandate of being a global advocate for environmental action and the main voice in the UN system for integrating the environmental dimension into the sustainable development agenda.

Tasks
Research, develop, finalize and present five case studies, which includes the following tasks:
1. Conducting research, which includes reading background documents, progress reports, and other knowledge products emerging from the project
2. Organizing preliminary meetings with the project Task Manager and the country focal point to discuss the research, fill in any gaps, obtain more lessons and agree on the key components/sections for the case study
3. In some cases, the research process may involve visiting project sites on the ground to interview project stakeholders and gain more information and lessons for the case study.
4. Drafting the text for the case study, keeping well under 1,500 words per case study
5. Incorporating two rounds of feedback from relevant personnel, addressing any comments and feedback. The consultant should allow/expect 3 weeks for the review process from other personnel. This includes obtaining feedback from UNEP’s gender expert.
6. Once the text has been finalized, the consultant will execute the layout (but not design), using previously produced case study templates in MS Word
7. The consultant will then host at least 2 webinars to share the results of the case studies, and this will include short presentations from the relevant Task Manager and/or country focal point.
