Organization Setting
The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist Governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.
FAO South Sudan supports community efforts to promote rural development and strengthen food security. To achieve this, FAO promotes increased agricultural production, improved efficiency in land and water use, and optimum utilization of forestry and fisheries resources. To this effect, FAO South Sudan is delivering on both emergency live hood response and resilience building projects with extension services delivery as a cross cutting responsibility.
Eleven field offices, one Field Office per state including Abyei administrative areas are established to deliver FAO programs to the end users. The FAO’s Field Offices are supporting various agriculture activities and managing multiple agriculture activities; the mentioned position is being hired to ensure efficient and effective extension service delivery.
Reporting Lines
The NPP - Agriculture Production works under the overall supervision of the Agriculture Officer (Head of Plant Production & Protection Unit) and the direct supervision of the respective Head of Field Office.
Technical Focus
• Ensure agricultural interventions are effectively implemented in the state by the field office and or implementing partners
• Provide technical support to different stakeholders on Agricultural practices
• Monitoring all activities under direct implementation or through implementing partners
• Provide up to date and specific information on Plant production & Protection management and utilization maintained, by the field office
• Empower local farmers with aspects of production and local knowledge used in plant production & protection and value chain dynamic.
Tasks and responsibilities
• Promote demand-led, pluralistic and participatory agricultural extension approaches that meet the diverse needs of smallholders and rural people in the state;
• Identify and promote appropriate agricultural extension approaches and tools for use by different stakeholders at state, county and payam levels, particularly to and among FAO’s implementing partners;
• Prepare appropriate training modules and material and support conduct of TOTs on various aspects related to agriculture production, plant production and protection;
• Fully participate in seed and tool quality assurance processes and activities (meeting and inspections) at field level. In collaboration with State Ministry of Agriculture, ensure that all seed are tested before distribution, and that all seed produced under community-based seed production are quality declared;
• Carry out germination test to ascertain viability of crop seeds before distribution to farmers;
• In collaboration with implementing partners and/or through direct implementation of program activities, carry out timely distribution of agricultural inputs;
• Provide technical support in establishment of various agricultural demonstrations at the Famer Community Centres, and with the farmer groups, and ensure that Implementing Partners adhere demonstrations standards required by FAO;
• Monitor implementation of agricultural activities in the state;
• Participate in the design and implementation of state-based assessments including but not limited to Rapid Seed Security Assessment (RSSA), Crop and Food Security Assessment (CFSAM), and other join interagency assessment that that take into consideration the food security;
• Carry out any other activities as assigned by the direct supervisors (operation and technical);
• Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• University degree in agriculture, agronomy, botany, horticulture, agricultural economics, or any other related social science field;
• Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience in implementation of agriculture projects and/or programmes including field work related to emergency or rehabilitation in agricultural field and project management;
• Working knowledge (Level C) of English is required
• Working knowledge (Level C) of Arabic will be considered an asset

• Demonstrated experience in field extension and training
• Demonstrated experience working in emergencies and development initiatives in South Sudan
• Demonstrated experience in the implementation of activities in collaboration with public and private sectors
• Demonstrated experience in project formulation, operation, implementation and monitoring
• Demonstrated experience working with government officials, development partners and other stakeholders
• Demonstrated experience in Humanitarian-Development and Peace Building nexus
