JOB OBJECTIVE
The Senior Drill and Blast Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operational control of drill and blast activities in accordance with legal requirements and company objectives.
This role provides technical excellence and operational direction to the drill and blast team, ensuring resources, capacity, and capability are aligned to work plans.
The engineer will lead the development, optimization, and implementation of drill and blast strategies, including planning, execution, performance monitoring, and compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
The position requires collaboration across departments to achieve production goals, minimize costs, and ensure sustainable mining practices.
This role also serves as a development pathway for future promotion to Drill and Blast Superintendent, with responsibility for sustaining value and building technical excellence across the discipline.
Responsibilities:
Demonstrate absolute commitment and leadership in providing a safe and healthy working environment:
• Support the Safety Management System and Environmental Management System (14001) ensuring a safety-first work culture, applying site safety standards, procedures and policies
• Participate in site safety initiatives and supporting the agreed behaviors in the team
• Participate in the identification and assessment of departmental environmental aspects and assessment
• Ensure that all environmental nonconformities and incidents are reported within the timeframe.
• Ensure compliance to Mali statutory requirements, licenses conditions, and Resolute environmental standards, policies, procedures and guidelines
• Ensure adequate proactive monitoring to maintain a safe work environment
• Instill a culture of recognizing hazards and minimizing risk and consequential harm to employees
• Drive and monitor housekeeping standards to maintain a safe and healthy working environment
• Support and investigate when work is stopped due to an unsafe act or condition, ensuring actions to mitigate the risk are implemented
•Take a proactive risk management approach to departmental tasks, i.e., recognize, analyze, respond to ensure risks are at an acceptable level; ensuring that prior to work commencing an effective risk assessment and controls are in place and understood
• Ensure standard work procedures and safe systems of work are understood, enforcing compliance
• Ensure personnel are adequately trained to safely complete work requirements; verifying work instructions are clear
• Ensure safety/toolbox meetings are conducted at the appropriate frequency with a focus of continued improvement of the Health and Safety Management System and addressing concerns
• Ensure drill and blast activities are planned and executed with full integration of safety controls, including blast exclusion zones, misfire protocols, and vibration monitoring.
• Monitor and enforce safety compliance among drill and blast contractors, ensuring alignment with site standards and procedures.
• Participate in emergency response planning and drills related to explosives handling and blast incidents.
• Track and report safety KPIs specific to drill and blast operations, including incident rates, near misses, and audit findings.

Technical Skills

• Design and review of bench blasting plans, firing sequences, and fragmentation models.
• Use of advanced software tools such as BlastPlan, SHOTPlus, BlastIQ, SURPAC, and Vulcan.
• Collaboration with Geotechnical and Geology teams to minimize ore dilution and ensure wall stability.
• Oversight of explosives inventory and magazine management.
• Preparation of SOPs and guidelines for safe and effective drill and blast operations.
• Delivery of monthly performance and cost justification reports.
• Technical mentoring and coaching of junior engineers.
• Implement feedback loops and performance reviews to continuously improve blast outcomes, fragmentation, and disability.
• Ensure all drill and blast activities comply with internal standards and external regulatory requirements, including explosives handling and storage.
• Evaluate and implement emerging technologies and digital tools to improve blast design accuracy and operational efficiency.
• Actively engage with Planning, Survey, and Processing teams to align drill and blast activities with broader operational goals.
Planning & Scheduling

• Development of monthly, quarterly, and annual drill and blast forecasts.
• Coordination with the Planning team to align drill and blast schedules with production targets.
• Monitoring of drill and blast progress to ensure alignment with short- and long-term mine plans.
• Validation of equipment capacity (drill rigs, MSUs) to meet operational requirements.
• Identification of improvement opportunities and alignment with business priorities.
• Ensure drill and blast schedules are fully integrated with production and processing targets to avoid bottlenecks and delays.
• Use performance data and field feedback to adjust plans dynamically and improve forecast accuracy.
• Work closely with Survey, Geology, and Operations teams to align drill patterns and blast timing with pit development.
• Develop contingency plans for weather disruptions, equipment breakdowns, or supply delays affecting drill and blast execution.
Formal Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering
• Shotfirer ticket (preferred).
Experience
• Minimum 6 years of experience in drilling and blasting operations, preferably in open-pit mining environments.
• Strong proficiency in Mine planning software such as SURPAC, Vulcan, and the Microsoft Office suite.
• Practical experience with advanced drill and blast software, including BlastPlan, SHOTPlus, and BlastIQ.
• Certified in Shotfirer Training and Blast Management.
• In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, environmental policies, and compliance standards related to drilling and blasting.
• Proven ability to analyze blast performance, optimize fragmentation, and reduce ore dilution.
• Experience in cost tracking, budget alignment, and reporting for drill and blast operations.
• Skilled in mentoring and coaching junior engineers, developing SOPs, and conducting performance appraisals.
• Effective communicator with strong analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision and coordinate across multiple departments and contractors.
• Holds a valid driver’s license.
