How can you make a difference?
Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Chief of Strategy, Planning and Accountability, the intern will provide assistance to various aspects of ECW’s climate change work, with a special focus on advocacy and communications ahead of the Conference of Parties (COP) 28 in Dubai in November and December 2023. This will be done through the preparation of ECW’s engagement in COP 28, in partnership with other ECW teams, as well as participation in the event itself. The intern will also work closely with ECW’s climate consultant to support ECW’s broader work on the development of its overall approach to climate change.
The learning agenda of this internship will be an increase in knowledge of how the global Education in Emergencies and Protracted Crises (EIEPC) sector operates, strategic planning, and policy development, as well as ensuring the voices and priorities of young people are incorporated into ECW’s approach to climate change.
KEY FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
COP preparation and engagement: Work with ECW teams – including advocacy and communications, partnerships and resource mobilization, education, SPA, amongst others to prepare for ECW’s engagement at COP 28. This will include contributing to the development of a communications and advocacy strategy, supporting the development of key messages for panel events, minute taking, preparation of talking points, preparing social media content, publicizing ECW case studies, COP logistics, etc.
COP participation and coordination: Identify further entry points for ECW to advocate on Education in Emergencies (EiE) and protracted crisis at COP 28 – including, but not limited to – the global goal on adaptation, and loss and damage discussions, strengthen and contribute to ECW’s coordination with other platforms, including youth networks, the Greening Education Partnership (GEP), amongst others, and participate in the COP 28 event.
Youth consultations: With ECW’s climate consultant, work together to develop the methodology and consult with youth groups at global, regional, and country level. This will include designing questions, note taking, and ensuring the key messages from the consultations feed into ECW’s advocacy and communications around COP 28.
Climate change strategy development: With ECW’s climate consultant, ensure the views and priorities of young people are fully incorporated into all of ECW’s work on climate change, especially on advocacy and communications, as well as programming, partnership, and resource mobilization. Support ECW’s climate consultant with additional consultations, as required, as well as participating in climate consultations, note-taking, data analysis and reporting writing.
Cross-cutting support: As required, undertake a range of logistical/operational activities to support the team. This includes taking meeting minutes, maintaining information management systems, preparing tools and templates, drafting presentations, etc.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree programme or have graduated within the past two years. Have an academic and experience background in any of the following fields:
Climate change, or environment,
Education, psychology, law
International development/human rights/humanitarian affairs
Liberal Arts or Sociology, particularly with a focus on women’s and gender studies
Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
Fluency in English up to the highest standard is required. Knowledge of another official UN language ( French or Spanish) is an asset.
Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office; and have no other relatives in the line of authority that the intern will report to.
Additional consideration will be given to any past experience.

Due to the COVID pandemic we expect remote online work to be the standard. Office space may be available in New York and Geneva based on discussion. Applicants who are in the USA or Switzerland at the time of application (for the US with a valid OPT/CPT if international student) are personally responsible for arranging any visa or immigration requirements, covering the entire period of their internship.
The internship is full-time (35 hrs) and working hours are flexible and set-up in mutual discussion with the supervisor considering existing study commitments. Interns will be associated with the ECW Secretariat Finance and Operations section under which Grants Management team sits. Interns may take up to 2.5 days per month off work for any reason, including for medical reasons. The stipend will be reduced for any absence beyond this quota.
Expected starting date August 2023 for 6 months (26 weeks). An internship may be terminated by either party, with a notice period of at least two weeks.
The monthly amount of internship stipend is the amount that is lower of the following two amounts:
USD 1,700 per month in the following offices: New York, Geneva, and Copenhagen; or 70% of the monthly salary of the GS level 3 step 1 in all other the duty stations.
