Under the direct supervision of the Global lead – Human Rights, the Programme Specialist (Human Rights) contributes to planning, design and implementation of the work of the Human Rights Unit to strengthen the mainstreaming of human rights and child rights across UNICEF programming, and to support human rights and child rights advocacy with Member States, UN entities, civil society and other key partners for the elevation of the child rights agenda.

How can you make a difference?

Technical Support:

Contributes to the Human Rights Unit’s provision of timely and quality technical advice to UNICEF country offices, regional offices and headquarters on the application of a human-rights based approach.
Contributes to the mainstreaming of child rights, and provision of technical advice to UN Human Rights fora and networks.
Partnerships, coordination and collaboration

Contributes to development of advocacy strategies for the elevation of child rights in interagency networks and global fora on human rights.
Proactively contributes to the development and strengthening of collaborative partnerships with Member States, civil society organisations, academia, and representatives of independent child rights institutions amongst others.
Supports coordination and collaboration within UNICEF Programme Group, between UNICEF Divisions and with UNICEF Regional and Country Offices.
Innovation, knowledge management and capacity building

Contributes to the development and dissemination of technical guidance and capacity- building tools.
Contributes to the identification, documentation and sharing of knowledge, lessons learned, and good practices on human/child rights and rights-based programmes/initiatives through various platforms and modalities.
Programme Management

Contributes to effective and efficient planning, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of the Human Rights Unit workplan
Contributes to the fulfillment of the Human Rights Unit’s internal reporting obligations.
Supports recruitment and supervision of consultants and interns.
Supports the management of allocation, disbursement, and monitoring of the Human Rights Unit financial resources.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Human Rights, law or international relations is required. Other advanced degrees will be considered only in cases of demonstrated extensive and relevant experience working in the field of human rights.
A minimum of 5 (five) years of progressively responsible professional experience in human rights, social development, child protection, and /or other related areas at the international level and Some of which preferably at the field level is required.
Experience in programme/project development and management is an asset.
Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.

Government employees that are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government before taking up an assignment with UNICEF.

UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason.
