Cadre organisationnel
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

This post is located in the Ecosystems Division, at the Nairobi duty station.

Under the direct supervision of the UN programme on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (UN-REDD) Team Leader and in close cooperation with the Director, Regional Office for Africa, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Responsabilités
• Develops, implements and evaluates UN-REDD programme/project development and implementation in Africa; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and initiates corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; ensures follow-up actions.
• Facilitates new programme development and expansion to new thematic and geographical areas in the Africa region.
• Supports UN-REDD Knowledge Management activities in Africa in close coordination with the UN-REDD Communications and Knowledge Management Officer for Africa and broader team.
• Initiates and coordinates outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars, makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
• Coordinates with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Food Agricultural Organization (FAO), and the UN-REDD Programme Secretariat on the planning and implementation of country level and regional activities.
• Researches, analyses and presents information gathered from diverse sources as it affects the delivery of the Africa work programme.
• Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
• Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations.
• Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme /project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).
• Leads and/or participates in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries.
• Coordinates policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
• Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Compétences

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies. Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required. Formation
Advanced University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in forest policy, forest management, natural resources management, international development ,environmental economics or related field is required.

A first level university degree in related field in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Expérience professionnelle
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in forest policy, forest management, climate change or ecosystem management is required.

Previous work experience in project or programme management with a UN agency or the private sector is desirable.

Previous work experience with REDD+ programmes in Africa or in other regions is desirable.

Experience in REDD+ finance and private sector investment in REDD+ is desirable.

Experience in social and environmental safeguards of REDD+ is desirable.

Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Connaissances linguistiques
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and "Knowledge of" equals a rating of "confident" in two of the four areas.

This is a project post. Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one (1) year and may be subject to extension.
