ABOUT WFP
The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
WFP is assisting smallholder farmers to increase rice productivity and add value to achieve a safe and quality product. Surpluses are purchased directly by WFP for distribution under the National School Feeding Programme. However, to provide more diverse market opportunities, there is a need to link assisted Farmer Based Organisations to markets beyond WFP.

Sierra Leone’s main staple is rice, which forms a key part of the national food cultural identity. However, urban dwellers consume almost entirely imported rice, based on cost and availability. To achieve national food self-sufficiency, there is a need to encourage increased consumption of local rice by adjusting consumer behaviour and preferences. To this end, WFP will support assisted smallholder aggregators to establish a brand identity for their locally produced and processed rice and create forward linkages with private-sector wholesalers and traders.
